Grisham Cottage
601 Craig Street

Located at the corner of Graig and Sykes St in Northside, this structure was one of four that were located at the back of the Smith Wells House on 704 E. Franklin St. These four small cottages were donated by owners John and Renee Grisham to different
organizations in Northside.
During the 2022 move to locations in Northside one of the four was demolished enroute. Two were moved to a flag lot located at 320 Lindsay Street and converted to a duplex now owned by Empowerment, Inc. 601 Craig Street is a duplex now owned by Pee Wee Homes.
The four cottages were once a part of an area known as “Baby Hollow”. The homes were built in the 1920s from kits sold through Sears and Roebuck catalog and range from 366 to 756 square feet. The neighborhood originally had 10 such cottages many of which were built by UNC to house new faculty after World War I.
Constructed for young families, the area around Park Street behind the Pratt Wells house was known as “Baby Hollow” because the professors that lived there averaged three children each. The last remaining structure from Baby Hollow is located at 620 park place. Most of the area once known as Baby Hollow is now a UNC parking lot.
601 Graig Street is listed because it has retained its charm and function in spite of a perilous move to this site.
